Earlier this week, Brazilian jiu-jitsu star Craig Jones made headlines by dropping $1 million on the desk of Joe Rogan during an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Known for his prowess on the mats, Jones is an elite BJJ competitor and a two-time silver medalist at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) tournament.
However, he won't be competing in the ADCC in 2024. Instead, Jones will be hosting the Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) in August, aiming to raise the stakes and compensation for athletes in the sport.
Jones plans to offer a $1 million prize for each of the two weight classes in his tournament, one above 80 kilograms and one below. To demonstrate his commitment and financial backing, Jones brought the cash to Rogan's podcast, creating a jaw-dropping moment.
“Ladies and gentlemen, that is one million dollars in cash [laughs]. That is so ridiculous, look at that. That is so crazy. Wow,” Rogan exclaimed during the podcast.
Jones' bold move is a significant statement, especially on a high-profile platform like the Joe Rogan Experience. Known for his outspoken nature, Jones has once again proven he isn't afraid to make waves in the media.
The CJI is poised to elevate the profile of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, attracting more attention to the sport and its athletes. With such a substantial prize on the line and increased visibility, Jones hopes to see BJJ reach new heights in the coming months and years.
