In the main event of UFC Vegas 94, Virna Jandiroba faced the most significant challenge of her career, headlining a UFC event for the first time. The seasoned 11-year veteran showcased her world-class grappling, securing a second-round armbar submission victory over Amanda Lemos.
Following her impressive win, the former Invicta FC strawweight champion wasted no time in stating her next ambition.
"Dana, I’m the next one," Jandiroba declared through a Portuguese translator. "I’m the one that needs to get that title shot. ... Dana, I’m your next champion."
Zhang Weili currently reigns supreme over the UFC’s 115-pound division, holding the title for the second time. Jandiroba revealed that a fight between her and Weili had been discussed before, suggesting now is the perfect moment to make it happen—with the championship on the line.
"I was supposed to fight Weili a long time ago, but destiny crosses different paths," Jandiroba explained. "It’s time. Let’s go."
Jandiroba (21-3) is in prime form, having won her last four fights. Saturday’s performance against Lemos (14-4-1), a former strawweight title challenger, might be her finest yet.
The bout was billed as a classic grappler versus striker confrontation. Jandiroba, representing the grappling side, wasted no time shooting for a takedown, effectively neutralizing Lemos’ renowned striking power. Lemos attempted to counter with a guillotine choke, but Jandiroba remained composed, escaping the hold with ease.
Lemos found herself on the defensive as Jandiroba transitioned to a leg lock, though she managed to escape. However, Jandiroba’s superior grappling control secured her the first round.
In the second round, Jandiroba showed respect for Lemos’ striking prowess, patiently waiting for the right moment to shoot again. A prolonged scramble ensued, culminating in Jandiroba taking Lemos’ back. Her python-like grip left Lemos with little room to maneuver, and when the opportunity for an armbar presented itself, Jandiroba seized it, forcing the tap at the 4:48 mark of the second round.
For Lemos, this loss marks her second defeat in her last three fights, following an unsuccessful title challenge against Zhang at UFC 292.
Virna Jandiroba's journey to the top continues to captivate fans and critics alike. With her latest victory, the call for a title shot grows louder. Will she be the next UFC strawweight champion? Only time will tell.
