Usman Nurmagomedov Retains Bellator Lightweight Title with Tactical Win Over Alexander Shabliy
Bellator San Diego: Usman Nurmagomedov vs. Alexander Shabliy

Usman Nurmagomedov continues his reign as Bellator’s lightweight champion, securing a unanimous decision victory over Alexander Shabliy in the main event of Bellator San Diego. This win marks his return to the cage after an 11-month hiatus and his first bout since a no-contest against Brent Primus in October 2023. Despite facing a tough opponent in Shabliy, who hadn’t been defeated in nearly eight years, Nurmagomedov showcased his resilience and strategy to keep his undefeated record intact.

The fight started with Shabliy finding early success, landing a solid right hand. However, Nurmagomedov responded with a well-timed takedown, although Shabliy quickly regained his feet. The first round saw both fighters exchange significant strikes, with Shabliy relying on crisp counterpunches while Nurmagomedov used effective leg kicks to stay competitive.

Round two mirrored much of the first, with Nurmagomedov mixing strikes and takedown attempts while Shabliy maintained his composure. The champion’s leg kicks started to show their impact as the fight progressed, especially in the slower-paced third round. Despite the mounting damage, Shabliy remained composed.

In the fourth round, Shabliy landed a beautiful combination but accidentally poked Nurmagomedov in the eye. To his credit, the champion quickly recovered and resumed fighting. Referee Mike Beltran issued a warning, and the action continued with Nurmagomedov delivering a head kick that stunned Shabliy, followed by an attempt at a submission.

Entering the final round, Shabliy needed a finish but failed to find the urgency necessary to turn the fight around. Nurmagomedov maintained control and won unanimously, with one judge scoring it 50-45 and the others 49-46. This win improves his record to an impressive 18-0.
