UFC Edmonton’s co-main event just got a significant shake-up, with both Derrick Lewis and Alexandr Romanov now set to face different opponents. The November 2 event at Rogers Place will still feature these two heavyweight contenders, but not against each other as originally planned.
Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis, a fan favorite with a reputation for explosive knockouts, will now go head-to-head with rising kickboxer Jhonata Diniz. This matchup promises a striking-heavy showdown, with both fighters known for their powerful stand-up game. Lewis, who holds a record of 28-12, has had his share of ups and downs over more than a decade in the promotion. Despite this, he remains one of the most beloved figures in the UFC.
Diniz, who boasts an 8-0 record is stepping into the spotlight in just his third UFC fight. The Brazilian has shown promise since his debut, having earned his contract through Dana White’s Contender Series in 2023. He has since defeated Austen Lane and Karl Williams, making this fight with Lewis a massive opportunity for him to make a name in the heavyweight division.
On the other side, Alexandr Romanov, who was originally set to face Lewis, will now take on Rodrigo Nascimento. Romanov, with a 17-3 record, is looking to bounce back after a tough stretch, having lost three of his last four fights. These losses are the only blemishes on his otherwise impressive career, and this bout offers him a chance at redemption.
Nascimento, who holds an 11-2 record, knows what it’s like to face Lewis—having lost to “The Black Beast” in his first UFC headliner back in May. That defeat snapped a three-fight winning streak, and he’ll be eager to get back in the win column against Romanov.
The reasons behind the original split of the Lewis vs. Romanov matchup remain unclear, and the UFC has yet to make an official announcement regarding these changes. However, the new pairings have already generated significant buzz among fans and analysts alike. With two heavy-hitting matchups now on the card, UFC Edmonton is shaping up to be an event packed with action and excitement.
