Dana White, the UFC CEO, recently addressed the buzz surrounding two high-profile fighters, Patricio “Pitbull” Freire and Aaron Pico, and their potential move to the UFC. Both former Bellator stars are at a crossroads, exploring new opportunities to further their MMA careers.
Freire, a former three-time Bellator Featherweight Champion and lightweight titleholder, recently parted ways with the PFL. His decision came after he publicly criticized how the promotion managed former Bellator fighters under its banner. Freire believed the organization’s co-founder, Donn Davis, lacked a coherent plan, which ultimately led to Bellator’s downfall.
At 37, Freire remains a seasoned competitor, but his age may be a factor in the UFC’s decision-making process. Addressing the media after UFC 311, Dana White stated,
“I don’t know, I’ll talk to the boys about that and see where we’re at.”
While White acknowledged Freire’s impressive resume, it remains unclear how the UFC matchmakers view his potential fit in the promotion.
In contrast, Aaron Pico’s prospects seem brighter. At just 28, Pico is on a three-fight winning streak and is widely regarded as a future MMA superstar. Known for his dynamic skills and explosive performances, Pico has yet to hit his prime.
When asked about Pico’s chances of joining the UFC, White was optimistic:
“I definitely know the boys are interested in him.”
This statement underscores the high regard Pico holds among UFC matchmakers. If signed, Pico could become a breakout star, solidifying his position as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport.
While Freire’s experience and accolades speak volumes, Pico’s youth and potential make him an enticing prospect for the UFC. Whether both fighters make their way to the Octagon remains to be seen, but their addition could bring fresh excitement to the UFC roster.
