Finally, Rose Namajonas managed to defend her title for the second time.
After defeating Weili Zhang by TKO in the first round in April to become the two-time women's strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas entered UFC 268. She was well aware that a rematch with Wally could be very stressful. But Namajus once again used his talent and professionalism to win the title. In the women's strawweight title bout at the UFC 268 Co-Men event at Madison Square Garden in New York, Rose Namajonas worked for more than 25 minutes to convince two of the three judges that she had won the championship. Left Zhang Valley behind to retain.
As soon as the match started, Weili (21-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) started the action with intermittent leg kicks. While Namajunas (11-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) vowed to combine a quick punch, find a home for each strike. Shortly after the first round, Valley saved the take-down and began trying to improve her position. Namajunas defended Weili's growing strike very well and forced Weili to choose some ground and pound strikes before returning to his feet. After getting off the mat, the pair exchanged a few strikes before the end of the round.
The second round was also very exciting and both the fighters were striking in full force. The two fighters were not allowing each other to dominate at any cost. At the end of the second round, Valley stung her with a hard punch, causing Namajon to stumble momentarily. The Challenger will use this moment briefly to take the fight to the mat, but Namajonas worked her way up and took down one of her own, ending the round at the top.
While the third round saw a slight slack in the fight, the two fighters now looked a little more cautious and were looking for a better chance to defeat their opponent.
Nimajonas came out a little more hurried in the fourth round, perhaps feeling that she was down on the scorecards. The quick punches found their mark and the champion kept up the pressure in the opening moments. Wiley made her way to a complete takedown, but managed to top the list after joking for the position. Wiley did well to reduce the damage, but spent a lot of time on her back before reaching the final round.
In the final moments of the match, the crowd started chanting slogans for the champion just moments before she got a take-down in the middle of the cage. Namajunas went on to strike the ground and pound, maintaining the top position for the majority of the round, sealing the final moments of the proceedings before moving on to the judges' scorecards.
The two judges will agree that Namajonas won the fight by scoring 48-47 and 49-46, while the dissenting judge scored 47-48 for Challenger.
For the first time in UFC history, a fighter defended his title twice against the same opponent. For the first time, Namajonas found himself successfully defending against the same fighter he had defeated to become the champion. He defeated Joanna Jedrzejic back-to-back in UFC 217 and UFC 237 and now defeated Valley in UFC 261 and UFC 268.
Valley, on the other hand, dropped two in a row for the first time in her career. The first Chinese champion in UFC history will try to fix the plane after going through a difficult 2021 campaign and falling short in this impending battle.
Namajonas will now likely face former champion Carla Esparza, again in the opening fight for the 2014 Strawweight title.
The question arises as to whether Nimajunas will be able to reclaim his title once again against former champion Carla Esparza. ?
