The UFC roster is continually shifting, and with the recent release of two notable names, the organization shows no signs of slowing its pace. As confirmed by UFC Roster Watch on X, heavyweight contender Alexandr "King Kong" Romanov (18-3) and former featherweight champion Germaine "The Iron Lady" de Randamie (10-5) have both been let go from the promotion. Their departures mark the end of unique journeys within the UFC, each bringing their own skill sets and competitive fire to the Octagon.
Alexandr Romanov: The Heavyweight Hopeful's Ups and Downs
Formerly ranked as the No. 13 heavyweight, Alexandr Romanov joined the UFC with a lot of promise, sporting an unbeaten record and gaining attention for his grappling-heavy, powerful fighting style. Romanov’s UFC career, however, hit bumps in his last few appearances. Going 2-3 in his final five bouts, his recent match against Rodrigo Nascimento at UFC Edmonton on November 2 ended his promotional contract on a less-than-spectacular note. Romanov’s hopes for a contract renewal were clearly on his mind leading up to that fight.
"I hope [I get a new contract]," Romanov shared with reporters. "Because I feel that I am just in the beginning of my biggest jump to the top 10."
Despite his confidence and desire to break into the top ranks, the UFC chose not to renew his contract, ending Romanov’s promotional run with a 7-3 record. While Romanov’s last few performances fell short of expectations, his mix of wrestling and raw power leaves him as a potential contender should he find success outside the UFC.
Germaine de Randamie: An Unfulfilled Farewell
Germaine de Randamie’s journey in the UFC has been nothing short of storied. Known for her fierce striking and tenacity, "The Iron Lady" became the first UFC women's featherweight champion in 2017. Yet, her time in the Octagon has been sporadic, and she took a four-year hiatus from 2020 to 2024. When she returned at UFC Vegas 90 in April, a loss to Norma Dumont closed out what would be her final fight in the UFC. However, de Randamie had hoped for one last appearance before the year’s end.
"I begged the UFC for 1 more fight," de Randamie shared on Instagram. "But it had to be this year. I promised myself I would retire from fighting December 31st, 2024. Unfortunately, the UFC told me all cards are fully booked. That’s why I decided that the time is now."
With this post, de Randamie announced her official retirement, drawing her UFC career to a close with a 7-3 record. A former kickboxer and mixed martial artist who could take on anyone at her peak, she will be remembered as one of the toughest women in the division, walking away with an undeniable legacy.
What’s Next For These Former UFC Champs?
For Romanov, the door remains open for a potential return. His career is still young, and with some strong performances in other promotions, "King Kong" could potentially make his way back into the UFC ranks. As for de Randamie, her decision to retire appears firm, leaving fans with memories of her championship journey and her many battles with top talent.
Both fighters have made their mark, and as the UFC’s roster undergoes further changes, their contributions will not be easily forgotten.
