Connor Hitchens, a promising featherweight fighter who once competed for Cage Warriors, has tragically passed away at the age of 26. The English promotion announced Hitchens' death on Tuesday, alongside the amateur organization International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF). The time and cause of death have not been made public.
Hitchens made his debut for Cage Warriors in April 2022 after an impressive run, winning six of his first seven professional bouts. Unfortunately, his debut did not go as planned; he suffered a second-round knockout loss to Manny Akpan. This fight turned out to be his last professional appearance in the cage.
Before turning professional, Hitchens had a notable amateur career, competing in nearly 20 fights from 2013 to 2017. During this period, he secured decision victories over some future stars, including undefeated Bellator standout Ciaran Clarke and recent PFL and Cage Warriors competitor Dominique Wooding.
MMA commentator Harry Williams was among the first to report the heartbreaking news. Reflecting on Hitchens' career, it is clear that he made a significant impact within the MMA community, both as an amateur and a professional.
IMMAF President Kerrith Brown expressed his condolences in a heartfelt statement:
“On behalf of the entire International Mixed Martial Arts Federation we are deeply saddened by the passing of Connor Hitchens.”
Hitchens' death is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictability that comes with it. While his career was cut short, his legacy and the memories he created in the cage will be remembered by fans, friends, and family.
As we reflect on his contributions to the sport, we also send our deepest sympathies to his loved ones during this difficult time. The MMA world has lost a talented fighter and a cherished individual whose presence will be greatly missed.
