Tony Ferguson Teases Fight News Amid Rumors of Joining Global Fight League

Kevin Lee Eyes a Rematch

Adding fuel to the fire, former UFC lightweight and Ferguson’s longtime rival, Kevin Lee, confirmed the rumors during an interview with Ariel Helwani.

“I’ve heard a couple of names tossed around, the one that interests me the most is Tony Ferguson,” Lee revealed. “He’s had his ups and downs in his career, but we’ve had a great fight for the UFC championship, and I think that’s something a lot of people can get behind. That’s a fight that I really, really want. He’s in talks with them.”

The rivalry between Ferguson and Lee dates back to their clash for the interim lightweight title at UFC 216 in 2017, where Ferguson secured a third-round submission victory. The prospect of a rematch under the GFL banner has already sparked interest among MMA fans, who are eager to see how both fighters would fare in their current stages of their careers.

Ferguson’s Recent Struggles

Ferguson’s potential move to GFL comes on the heels of a challenging period in his career. After his most recent loss to Michael Chiesa via submission at UFC Abu Dhabi last August, Ferguson extended his losing streak to eight fights—a far cry from his dominant 12-fight winning streak that once solidified his status as a top lightweight contender. Despite calls for retirement and a symbolic gesture of leaving one glove in the Octagon, Ferguson seems unwilling to walk away from MMA just yet.

What GFL Could Mean for Ferguson

For Ferguson, joining GFL may represent a chance to rebuild his legacy and prove that he still has what it takes to compete at a high level. At 41, “El Cucuy” remains one of the most unique and enigmatic personalities in MMA, with a loyal fanbase that has followed him through the highs and lows of his career.

GFL’s Big Debut

According to Kevin Lee, GFL is set to stage its first event on April 4. While details remain sparse, the fledgling promotion appears to be making bold moves by targeting high-profile names like Ferguson. If the rumors are true, a Ferguson-Lee rematch could serve as the centerpiece for GFL’s inaugural event, drawing significant attention to the promotion and providing Ferguson with a fresh platform to showcase his skills.

What’s Next for “El Cucuy”?

While the specifics of Ferguson’s next move remain uncertain, one thing is clear: Tony Ferguson isn’t ready to hang up his gloves. Whether he chooses to continue his career in GFL or elsewhere, fans can expect the unpredictable and unorthodox fighter to bring the same tenacity and creativity that made him a fan favorite in the first place.
