Tony Ferguson Joins Global Fight League: A New Chapter in MMA
Tony Ferguson

Tony Ferguson, the former interim UFC lightweight champion and winner of The Ultimate Fighter, has officially parted ways with the UFC after an incredible 14-year career. Known as El Cucuy, Ferguson amassed a record of 25-11 MMA, 15-9 UFC, and became a fan favorite due to his unorthodox fighting style and relentless spirit.

Despite his recent struggles, including a UFC-record eighth-straight loss to Michael Chiesa last August at UFC on ABC 7, Ferguson isn’t ready to retire. While UFC CEO Dana White urged him to consider stepping away from the octagon, Ferguson firmly stated, I still have some fight left in me.

Ferguson’s departure from the UFC marks the end of an era, but it also signals a fresh start. Multiple sources have confirmed that he has signed with the Global Fight League (GFL), a newly launched team-based MMA promotion. GFL’s inaugural draft is set for Friday at 8 p.m. ET, and Ferguson is already draft-eligible.

Excitement surrounds Ferguson's move, as former opponent Kevin Lee, who also signed with GFL, publicly challenged him for a rematch. Lee seeks redemption for his 2017 submission loss to Ferguson in their interim lightweight title fight.

The GFL is preparing for its official debut in 2025, promising a unique team-based format to revolutionize the MMA landscape. If Ferguson is selected during the draft, he will officially be part of the GFL, paving the way for new rivalries and opportunities.

Ferguson’s legacy is undeniable. From a historic 12-fight winning streak to becoming a household name in the UFC, his journey proves that resilience defines a fighter. Now at 40, Ferguson’s determination to continue competing on a high level makes his transition to the GFL a thrilling development for MMA fans worldwide.
