Tom Aspinall has fired back at Ciryl Gane amidst accusations of dodging a fight. Aspinall claimed that Gane declined a chance to challenge for his interim heavyweight title at UFC 304, preferring to film a movie instead. Gane rebutted, saying,
“He only accepts my fights when I cannot. He likes to say that I refuse him, but the truth is I have already called him out.”
Aspinall, set to defend his belt against Curtis Blaydes, dismissed Gane’s claim. “The UFC wanted me to fight Ciryl, and Ciryl didn’t want to,” Aspinall said on The MMA Hour.
“If he’s happy with movies, that’s fine, but let’s not pretend he wanted to fight me.”
Ranked as the No. 1 heavyweight, Aspinall emphasized his focus on fighting, not distractions.
“I’m here to get in the cage and fight,” he stated. “If Gane wants to do something else, that’s his choice, but I’m ready to fight.”
Aspinall has accused Gane of avoiding fights with top contenders in the past. Gane is set to face Alexander Volkov at UFC 308, while Aspinall remains focused on his goal of fighting the best in the heavyweight division.
