In the world of UFC, few fighters show the commitment that welterweight prospect Themba Gorimbo does. Without an official backup contract or payment, Gorimbo is fully preparing himself to fight at UFC 310 on December 7, hoping to step in for either Nick Diaz or Vicente Luque if they can’t make it. Despite not being guaranteed a fight, Gorimbo’s focus and determination are driving him through a full training camp, with a self-belief that has him feeling ready for a moment that may or may not come.
Gorimbo’s decision to prepare for UFC 310 stems from the unpredictable status of Nick Diaz, who is scheduled to face Luque after previously withdrawing from a fight in August. Diaz, an MMA veteran, hasn’t been in the Octagon for over three years, leaving Gorimbo to bank on the odds of a potential dropout.
“I am here in Las Vegas right now preparing as if I am fighting on the 7th of December against Vicente Luque,” Gorimbo told. “If it so happens that Diaz doesn’t show up to the party, I’m here and I’m ready.”
Leaving his family behind in Miami, Gorimbo has returned to Las Vegas, driven by a sense of duty toward his career and family. For him, every fight is an opportunity to provide for them and showcase his skills. The chance to take on Luque is one he relishes, seeing it as an invaluable opportunity to face a well-established opponent. This is a calculated risk, he says.
“If I didn’t take a calculated risk, I’d be in Miami with my family. But I’m taking a calculated risk. The family time is going to come. Why I do this is for my family.”
Although focused on Luque, Gorimbo wouldn’t mind fighting Diaz if fate grants him that opportunity.
“Coming up, I was a big fan of Nick Diaz,”
Gorimbo shared, revealing how the chance to compete against a fighter he once idolized would be an incredible experience.
“I know Nick Diaz’s moves, I’ve studied them over the years…we’re going to have a slap competition, and may the best man win.”
Regardless of how things unfold, Gorimbo is determined to be at the weigh-ins, cutting weight and prepared to fight with just a day’s notice if necessary. His dedication to stay ready is more than just talk; it’s a testament to his hunger and resilience.
