Superlek Kiatmoo9 is gearing up for one of the most significant challenges of his career as he prepares to face Jonathan Haggerty at ONE 168: Denver. Set to take place at the Ball Arena on September 6, this highly anticipated clash sees the reigning ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Champion moving up in weight to compete for the bantamweight Muay Thai belt.
Understanding the enormity of the task ahead, Superlek is leaving nothing to chance. The 28-year-old Thai superstar has enlisted the expertise of a seasoned sports scientist known as Hook, who specializes in strength and conditioning. Their collaboration, which began in June, has been integral to Superlek’s preparation for the five-round duel.
“He joined my team in June. We’ve been working closely since. We’ve spent a lot of time together, working on customized plans. We’re close,” Superlek revealed.
The primary challenge for Hook is helping Superlek bulk up appropriately to handle the power and size of his opponent, all while maintaining the agility and precision that have made him one of the top pound-for-pound strikers in the world.
This task is especially complex, as Superlek needs to add size and muscle for the bantamweight division while also ensuring he can comfortably return to flyweight to defend his kickboxing crown.
“It’s essential to have someone you can trust on your team. This is my first time moving up to bantamweight, so he’s been a big help,” Superlek shared.
Their focus has been on a balanced regimen that increases strength without adding excessive muscle mass.
“We’ve been doing weight training, making sure that strength is increased, but not too much muscle mass because I still want to be able to defend my belt at flyweight. His knowledge is definitely valuable. I feel prepared and supported in this fight camp,” Superlek explained.
Superlek’s commitment to leveraging scientific and nutritional expertise highlights his dedication to staying at the top of his game. He’s a firm believer in the value of a multidisciplinary approach,
stating,
“Every athlete should work with a nutritionist and a sports scientist. They can help you develop your potential in incredible ways. If you train alone without these two, you might reach a certain level, but with their help, you can take your performance to the next level.”
