The MMA community was shaken to its core as news broke of Derek Thompson’s untimely passing at the age of 39. The UFC, a family he dedicated so much of his life to, paid tribute to Thompson during their event in Edmonton, with a heartfelt in-memoriam segment that aired and a series of emotional social media tributes from some of the sport’s biggest names.

Thompson, a native of Miami born in 1984 and raised in Hyannis, Massachusetts, was a cherished member of the UFC production team, known for his work in the graphics department. His dedication, warmth, and humility left a deep impact on everyone who knew him. According to longtime colleagues like Megan Olivi, who shared her grief on X, “Derek was our gentle giant. We flew to + worked so many events together. We quoted old school lyrics, I tried to convince him to come to Pilates, and we shared some great meals in whatever city we were in. It’s beyond devastating. His loss is felt by everyone – not just in production but around the company.”

The tribute was filled with touching memories, each one underscoring the warmth and laughter Thompson brought to the UFC team. During the broadcast in Edmonton, commentators Daniel Cormier and Brendan Fitzgerald struggled to hold back tears as they remembered their friend. Cormier, who had shared years of friendship with Thompson, later took to Instagram to express his sorrow. Posting videos of them laughing and playing FIFA, he wrote, “Very sad that you’re gone my friend. We will miss you forever. Loved this guy so much, gonna miss our FIFA games, traveling the world, our team dinners and just hanging out. You were a great friend, Derek! You’ll be missed.”

Michael Bisping also shared memories of his time with Thompson, posting a couple of photos on Instagram and writing, “In loving memory of Derek Thompson. I could not believe the news when I heard of his passing. Derek was always the source of a smile and warmness and only 39 years old. Rest In Peace. My heart goes out to all your friends, family, and UFC family. Truly a sad day.”

The outpouring of tributes did not end with Cormier and Bisping. Noted MMA journalist Ariel Helwani remembered Thompson as “a very special soul. Always happy. Always smiling. Always willing to help. A true pleasure to work with.” Veteran UFC fighter Michael Chiesa added, “A great man was taken from the world too soon. Derek’s happiness was contagious, he was very genuine and he is loved by so many people. I’m grateful to have known him and to have had many memorable times with him. You will be forever missed my friend.”

Fans also expressed their sadness and respect for Thompson, who, though he worked behind the scenes, touched the lives of many in the UFC community. “R.i.P 39 is way too young,” wrote one fan. Another added, “Yeah, you can tell this guy was loved. It’s rare to see that love for backstage staff. Rip.”

Derek Thompson’s passing is a stark reminder of the profound bond that exists within the UFC community, extending beyond the fighters and into the often-unsung heroes of production and support. His legacy will live on in the memories of those he inspired, reminding everyone of the kindness and humility that marked his life. Rest in peace, Derek Thompson. You are gone far too soon, but your spirit remains in the hearts of all who knew you.
