PFL to Phase Out Bellator Brand and Transition to Tournament-Style Format in 2025

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is gearing up for transformative changes in 2025. Among the most notable developments is the formal conclusion of the Bellator brand, marking the end of its independent identity within mixed martial arts. This follows PFL’s acquisition of Bellator in a deal with Paramount in late 2023.

Initially, PFL had announced that Bellator would operate independently, retaining its champions and events. This arrangement persisted throughout 2024. However, cracks began to show when a planned event in London lost its main event just days before the fight and another card in Paris was outright canceled. As the New Year approaches, Bellator fighters will officially transition to competing solely under the PFL banner.

PFL has not clarified how current Bellator champions will be integrated into the organization. One possibility may emerge during the January 25 event, where reigning Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov defends his title against Paul Hughes. Notably, the event is being branded as a "PFL Champions" card, with no mention of Bellator.

The change has not been without controversy. Several high-profile Bellator fighters, including featherweight champion Patricio Pitbull and bantamweight champion Patchy Mix, have voiced frustration over inactivity, even requesting releases due to prolonged periods without fights.

In addition to absorbing Bellator, PFL is overhauling its competition format. The promotion is abandoning its traditional regular-season and playoff structure favoring a single-elimination tournament style. These tournaments will span multiple weight classes and run throughout the year. While the new format mirrors traditional tournaments, it comes with a reduction in prize money; winners will now earn $500,000, down from the previous $1 million. This adjustment was initially reported by MMA journalist Al Zullino.

PFL co-founder Donn Davis confirmed the changes, including the retirement of the Bellator brand. Fans can expect more announcements regarding these developments and plans for the 2025 season ahead of the January 25 event.
