Aaron Pico, one of MMA’s most promising featherweights, finds himself at the center of a free agency whirlwind. As his contract with the PFL reportedly expired, speculation about his future has been rife. Pico’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, recently shared insights into the situation, revealing that the UFC is interested in signing the fighter. However, the PFL, with matching rights, appears determined to retain him for the long term.
Donn Davis, co-founder of the PFL, has stepped forward to clarify the organization’s position amidst the swirling rumors. Responding on Twitter, Davis highlighted the substantial offer made to Pico, which includes a lucrative new contract and a shot at the PFL title.
“2025 hopefully brings less MMA noise and disinformation,” Davis wrote. “[PFL] has offered Pico a title fight and a major new contract … We love Aaron and look forward to him having big fights at PFL for the long term.”
The stakes for Pico’s career trajectory are significant. Abdelaziz disclosed that Pico was initially set to face Patricio Pitbull for the Bellator featherweight title in a co-promotional bout with RIZIN this month. However, the fight and its corresponding contract fell through after the event was canceled.
Patricio Pitbull has also voiced frustrations with the PFL since its merger with Bellator in November 2023, citing a lack of activity and repeatedly requesting his release from the promotion.
As the MMA community speculates about Pico’s next move, the PFL’s offer underscores its commitment to keeping the talented fighter on its roster. While the UFC could present a compelling alternative, the promise of a championship opportunity and a long-term vision from the PFL might sway Pico’s decision.
The coming weeks will reveal whether Pico chooses to stay with the PFL or pursue new horizons in the UFC. For now, the featherweight star’s future remains one of the most intriguing storylines in MMA.
