Paul Hughes to Headline PFL Europe Belfast on May 10

Paul Hughes is set to make his long-awaited return to the cage as the main event of PFL Europe Belfast on May 10. The Irish lightweight standout will step back into action at The SSE Arena in front of a passionate home crowd, marking a major moment in his career.

Hughes last competed in January when he faced Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov in the main event of PFL Champions Series 1. Despite entering as a heavy underdog, Hughes delivered a spirited performance against the undefeated Russian. Over five intense rounds, the two young stars went back and forth in a closely contested battle. However, after 25 minutes, Nurmagomedov secured a majority decision victory, retaining his title.

Following the fight, many fans and analysts praised Hughes for his resilience and skill, with calls for an immediate rematch gaining momentum. However, Nurmagomedov publicly dismissed the idea, opting to move on to other challenges. As a result, Hughes will now shift his focus to PFL Europe, where he will aim to reestablish himself as a top contender.

Earlier today, the PFL officially announced that Hughes will headline their Belfast event in May. While his opponent has yet to be named, the card will also feature the opening round of the PFL Europe tournament. Hughes expressed his excitement in the official press release, stating:

“All my career I’ve said I will main event The SSE Arena, and we’ve made my dream into a reality. Belfast, I’m coming to put on a show for my people, and I will show you how much your support means to me. It’s time to get to work.”

PFL CEO Pete Murray also highlighted the significance of the event, saying:

“The vocal support for Paul meant this was an easy decision, and I can’t wait to feel the atmosphere of The SSE Arena during the main event. But we plan to stack the card with our PFL Europe Tournament fighters, and a host of athletes who are prepared to lay it all on the line and put on a show.”

With Hughes headlining in his home country, anticipation is already building for what promises to be a special night in Belfast.
