Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk is ready to lace up his gloves for a potential trilogy bout with Anthony Joshua, but only after he finishes his business with Tyson Fury. Fresh off a historic victory against Fury, ‘The Cat’ Usyk is now the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis, who achieved the same feat 25 years ago.
In a stunning showdown earlier this year, Usyk handed Fury his first career defeat in a split decision victory that sent shockwaves through the boxing world. The fight, held in Saudi Arabia, saw Usyk solidify his place among the sport's all-time greats. But as quickly as Usyk claimed all the heavyweight gold, he had to relinquish the IBF title due to a sanctioning body’s decision. Now, that vacant title is up for grabs in a clash between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium later this year.
While Usyk gears up for his highly anticipated rematch with Tyson Fury, boxing fans are buzzing about a possible third bout with Joshua. The Ukrainian star has already defeated ‘AJ’ twice, both times by decision, but remains open to another showdown. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Usyk expressed his respect for Joshua, acknowledging the pivotal role the British boxer played in boosting his global fame.
“I don’t particularly want any rematches,” Usyk admitted. “But when we beat Tyson Fury for the second time and when Anthony Joshua beats Daniel Dubois, of course, they will want to do a third fight.”
Usyk continued,
“From my point of view, I have no right to deny Anthony a third fight because he gave me two incredible fights. Anthony helped me become even more famous in the world. Anthony did it. And if it happens with God’s help, then I am ready for a third fight with Anthony.”
With the heavyweight division in a state of flux, a third encounter between Usyk and Joshua could be just what the sport needs. Should Usyk emerge victorious against Fury once more, the stage will be set for a trilogy bout that could define the careers of both fighters.
