Oleksandr Usyk, the reigning king of the heavyweight division, is ready to hit pause on his illustrious career. Fresh off back-to-back victories over Tyson Fury in 2024, the Ukrainian phenom is planning an extended break that could stretch well into 2025.
After 24 grueling rounds with Fury, Usyk has solidified his position as the top heavyweight in the sport, boasting a flawless 23-0 record.
“It’ll be a very long preparation,” his manager, Egis Klimas, shared with Boxing Scene. “After another 12 rounds with Fury, he needs a good, long recovery.”
While Usyk steps away from the spotlight, the heavyweight division remains active. Daniel Dubois, one of Usyk’s past opponents, has emerged as a potential contender. Dubois, who suffered a ninth-round knockout loss to Usyk in 2023, has been vocal about seeking a rematch. However, he must first get through Joseph Parker in February.
Dubois’ controversial low-blow incident during their 2023 clash still lingers in the minds of boxing fans. Nevertheless, his recent knockout of Anthony Joshua has reignited his title aspirations. If Dubois secures a win over Parker, he could position himself as the next logical challenger for Usyk’s titles.
However, any potential rematch wouldn’t take place until late 2025, according to Klimas.
“Dubois has to beat Parker before he can even start thinking of [Usyk],” he explained.
As Usyk approaches his 38th birthday in January, his achievements remain unparalleled. With multiple wins over heavyweights like Fury and Joshua, Usyk has dominated and redefined the heavyweight landscape.
For now, the champ is taking a well-earned breather. Whether it's a potential rematch with Dubois or another epic showdown in 2025, fans can expect Usyk to return with the same precision and determination that have defined his career.
