Nick Diaz's Rocky 2024 and the Hope for a Comeback: Jason 'Mayhem' Miller's Take

Nick Diaz, the former Strikeforce and WEC champion, has had a turbulent 2024. The long-awaited return to action, after a three-year layoff, was initially set to take place last summer in Abu Dhabi against Vicente Luque. However, just days before the bout, Diaz mysteriously withdrew, leaving fans in the dark about the reasons behind the change. The fight was rebooked for UFC 310 in December, but once again, the event would not go as planned.

This cancellation, though, was far more troubling than the first. In the weeks leading up to UFC 310, videos of Nick Diaz surfaced, showing him in distress. One particularly alarming clip showed Diaz shirtless on the side of a road, lighting grass on fire. The video quickly went viral, prompting concerns about the former UFC title contender's mental and physical state. While Diaz never addressed the video directly, it led to his removal from the fight against Luque, with Themba Gorimbo stepping in. Gorimbo would go on to earn a first-round submission win, while Diaz's silence continued.

In the months following this incident, Nick Diaz has remained mostly out of the public eye. His absence has fueled further speculation about his future in the sport. However, one of his former rivals, Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller, recently offered some hope for fans of Diaz and the fighter himself.

Appearing on The Ariel Helwani Show earlier this week, Miller shared some encouraging news about his former adversary. The two famously feuded in the late 2000s, but their rivalry came to an end in 2023 when they reconciled. After Diaz’s troubling video surfaced, Miller reached out to offer support, and it seems that Nick Diaz is on a better path now.

Miller, who has always been open about his own struggles and the challenges of navigating fame, expressed empathy for Diaz's situation. “Somebody from Nick Diaz’s camp gave me a note that [said]: ‘Hey, look, he’s getting it together’,” Miller said during his appearance. “It’s very sensitive to talk about this guy’s journey because I have a lot of empathy for it. Because it’s easy, like I said, to fall into this darkness. People do not understand how, you know, if you’re a C-level celebrity, it’s super easy.”

Miller went on to explain the pressures that come with being in the spotlight, particularly when one is a superstar like Diaz. "A lot of people will glob on you and drag you in this direction, that direction. And it’s super easy to fall into, let alone huge, superstar champions like Nick Diaz… So it’s hard for me to come off without sounding negative about these guys’ experience right now. But right now, look, we see that it’s not going perfect. And both camps have told me that they’re on the right path to get back together.”

Miller’s comments provide some much-needed optimism for Nick Diaz fans, who have been hoping for his return to the cage. While it’s clear that Diaz’s journey is far from smooth, it’s heartening to hear that he’s actively working on getting back to a better place. The road to recovery may be long, but Diaz has always been a fighter, both inside and outside the cage.

As for whether Diaz will fight again, only time will tell. His future in MMA remains uncertain, but there is still hope that he could make a triumphant return to the sport he once dominated. For now, it seems that Nick Diaz is on the path to recovery, and perhaps one day, we’ll see him back in the octagon.

What do you make of Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller’s comments? Do you think Nick Diaz will ever fight again, or has his time in the cage passed?
