Marlon Moraes, Ex-UFC Title Challenger Trades Gloves for Badge

Marlon Moraes, a name synonymous with thrilling knockouts and intense battles in the UFC bantamweight division, has swapped his fighting gear for a badge. The Davie (FL) Police Department recently welcomed Moraes as one of its newest officers, marking a smooth transition for the former MMA star.

This news comes less than a year after Moraes announced his retirement from the sport. His last fight, a loss to eventual PFL featherweight finalist Gabriel Braga in June 2023, became the bookend on a career filled with both highs and lows.

Moraes isn't the only UFC fighter to trade the cage for the streets.  His former opponent, Jimmie Rivera, donned the police uniform after graduating from the New Jersey police academy in early 2023.  Current UFC fighters like Renato Moicano have also openly expressed their desire to pursue law enforcement after their fighting days are over.

Moraes' journey began in the regional scene of Brazil back in 2007.  After navigating the initial challenges of his career, he found his stride in the World Series of Fighting (now PFL), eventually capturing the promotion's bantamweight title.

His arrival in the UFC was marked by a narrow split decision loss to Raphael Assunção, snapping a then-impressive 13-fight winning streak.  However, Moraes bounced back in spectacular fashion, securing four dominant victories inside the Octagon. These wins included brutal knockouts of former champions Aljamain Sterling and Jimmie Rivera, solidifying his place as a top contender.

A shot at the vacant UFC bantamweight title followed at UFC 238, but Moraes fell short, losing to the dynamic Henry Cejudo via third-round TKO.  A victory over UFC legend José Aldo would be the final highlight of Moraes' career.  He would unfortunately end his fighting run on a seven-fight losing streak.

Despite the challenging conclusion, Moraes' legacy remains one of an exciting fighter who delivered memorable moments inside the cage. Now, he embarks on a new chapter, ready to serve and protect his community.
