Kyoji Horiguchi, the dynamic Japanese fighter with a storied MMA career, is considering a return to the UFC. Having previously fought under the promotion from 2013 to 2016, Horiguchi left on a high note with a 7-1 record. Since then, he’s captured bantamweight titles in both RIZIN and Bellator and is now scheduled to defend his 125-pound belt against Nkazimulo Zulu at RIZIN DECADE in Saitama, Japan, on December 31.
Reflecting on his UFC stint, Horiguchi's only loss came against then-champion Demetrious Johnson. Despite that setback, he left the promotion after an impressive streak of wins. He has continued to dominate, defeating top fighters like Manel Kape, Sergio Pettis, Darrion Caldwell, and Kai Asakura. Discussing a potential return, Horiguchi said,
“It was my decision [to leave the UFC]. I made this decision, so I have no regrets. But I do have the feeling of wanting to make another challenge in the UFC.”
Horiguchi also highlighted the unique atmosphere of Japanese MMA events compared to the UFC. He explained that Japanese promotions emphasize theatrics and fighter motivation, saying,
“I think the biggest difference is that Japanese promotions, they really hype the fight. The walkouts are great... Japan has more flair to it.”
At American Top Team, Horiguchi trains alongside UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja, who has cemented his dominance with four title defenses and eight victories over top-15 contenders. While both athletes respect each other, they’ve joked about a potential clash if Horiguchi returns to the UFC.
“We kind of talk about it in the gym,” Horiguchi said. “We joke around and I tell them that I can beat you up anytime... If it happens, I think we could make it happen.”
Horiguchi remains inspired by his sole UFC conqueror, Demetrious Johnson, whom he calls a legend. However, Horiguchi aspires to surpass Johnson's legacy, stating,
“My goal is to have more accomplishments and have a better record than what DJ has accomplished for me to become the best.”
