Kayla Harrison Overcomes Adversity to Defeat Ketlen Vieira, Eyes UFC Title Shot
UFC 307: Kayla Harrison vs. Ketlen Vieira

Kayla Harrison is laser-focused on becoming UFC champion after securing a hard-fought decision victory over Ketlen Vieira at UFC 307. Despite being the heavy favorite, Harrison faced unexpected challenges when Vieira landed a sharp elbow in the second round, leading to significant swelling and a bloody cut on Harrison’s forehead. However, the two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo displayed her resilience by taking the fight to the ground and dominating with ground-and-pound strikes.

The judges scored the fight 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 in Harrison’s favor, improving her UFC record to 2-0. Following the fight, Harrison praised her opponent but made it clear that her sights were set on UFC gold.

“My hat goes off to Ketlen,” Harrison said. “She’s a killer. She’s No. 2 for a reason. Ladies, enjoy it while you can. Because the queen is home and she’s coming for that f*cking gold.”

The fight began with Harrison showing confidence in her striking before moving to the clinch, looking to secure a takedown. Vieira initially defended well, preventing Harrison from getting the inside trip or throw. However, that success was short-lived as Vieira’s aggressiveness opened the door for Harrison to secure a takedown. Once on the ground, Harrison unleashed a barrage of punches, but the round ended before she could finish the fight.

The second round saw Vieira land her best shot of the night—a well-timed elbow that caused significant swelling and bleeding on Harrison’s forehead. Despite the damage, Harrison pressed forward, although she struggled to secure another takedown.

By the third round, Harrison’s face was visibly worn from Vieira’s strikes, including a bleeding nose, but she remained relentless. She secured another takedown and dominated from the top position, delivering heavy punches and elbows, keeping Vieira on the defensive until the final bell.

Though the fight was tougher than expected, Harrison’s victory solidified her position as a top contender for the bantamweight title. With this win, Harrison is likely next in line to challenge the winner of Raquel Pennington vs. Julianna Peña for the UFC championship.
