Jorge Masvidal, one of MMA’s most charismatic and polarizing stars, has set his sights on an Octagon comeback. Though he hasn’t competed in mixed martial arts since April 2023, Masvidal has made it clear he’s not done with the sport he calls his “first love.” His recent detour into boxing saw him face long-time UFC rival Nate Diaz in July, a fight he lost by majority decision. But despite five consecutive losses across combat sports, the 39-year-old “Gamebred” remains undeterred.
Masvidal recently expressed his eagerness to return to MMA, telling Grind City Media, “I had a blast doing the boxing… but there’s just nothing in the world that compares to MMA.” After a session at American Top Team, Masvidal said he still feels the same thrill he did years ago, reminiscing about training and the challenge of the sport. “Definitely 100% back to MMA… I don’t know when I’m fighting, but I’m fighting either the end of this year or next year,” he said.
From Knockouts to Title Shots: The Masvidal Legacy
Masvidal's meteoric rise in 2019 took the MMA world by storm. With a highlight reel of knockouts, including his five-second KO of Ben Askren (the fastest in UFC history), and a dominant win over Diaz to claim the inaugural BMF title, Masvidal became a household name. His newfound fame opened the door to two high-profile welterweight title fights against Kamaru Usman, though both attempts came up short. Subsequent losses to top welterweights Colby Covington and Usman pushed Masvidal to take a break from MMA.
But he believes one big win could shift everything. In an interview with GiveMeSport, Masvidal said, “Let’s roll the dice for the No. 1 guy in the world. I’ll find out if I am who I say I am. I want to fight the world’s best.”
A Grudge with Leon Edwards: Unfinished Business?
Masvidal's latest target? Former welterweight champion Leon Edwards, a man with whom he shares a heated history. Back in March 2019, after a UFC London event, a backstage altercation led Masvidal to land a “three-piece and a soda” on Edwards, igniting a rivalry that has yet to be settled in the cage. Edwards recently lost his welterweight title to Belal Muhammad, and Masvidal isn’t missing the chance to renew his challenge.
“Leon is scared of me, man,” Masvidal claimed in his interview, taunting Edwards and calling him out for a long-awaited showdown. "What’s up, mother-f*****?” Masvidal’s enthusiasm is unmistakable, as he pushes for a high-stakes fight that could relaunch him into title contention.
Can Jorge Masvidal Reclaim His Place at the Top?
Despite his recent setbacks, Masvidal is betting on himself. His brash style and knockout power have proven effective before, and he’s determined to show the world he still has what it takes to compete with the best. If he can secure a fight with Edwards—or any top contender—the MMA community may be looking at a comeback story that only “Gamebred” could script.
Will Masvidal’s passion for MMA and relentless drive be enough to propel him back into the spotlight? Only time will tell, but one thing’s certain: Masvidal isn’t ready to fade away quietly.
