Jonathan Haggerty's Tactical Evolution Shines at ONE 171: Qatar

Jonathan Haggerty proved that patience and precision are as deadly as aggression at ONE 171: Qatar. The reigning ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Champion showcased a more calculated approach, outclassing #1-ranked contender Wei Rui to secure a unanimous decision victory at Lusail Sports Arena on February 20.

For Haggerty, this was more than just another win—it was redemption. After losing his Muay Thai crown to Superlek Kiatmoo9 at ONE 168, the British striker knew he had to refine his game. His previous aggressive style, while thrilling, had cost him dearly. This time, he embraced a measured approach, proving that a champion’s true strength lies in adaptability.

"I didn’t want to get knocked out for 49 seconds again. I learned from my mistakes," Haggerty admitted. "Me, my coach, my team—we went back to the drawing board. We knew we had to take our time, stick to the game plan, and have a great fight."

The opening round painted a different picture, though. Wei Rui, a decorated K-1 Champion, came out strong, and Haggerty found himself on the wrong side of the scorecards. Watching from cage side, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong shared his initial doubts.

"Jon lost the first round, but then he won four in a row. I was sitting with Renzo Gracie, and we thought, ‘Man, Jon’s gonna get knocked out because Wei Rui looked so scary in that first round,’" Sityodtong revealed.

But the Brit remained composed, turning the tide with calculated strikes and strategic adjustments. His five-round showcase not only secured him the win but also earned admiration from fans and officials alike.

Haggerty’s victory at ONE 171 marks a significant chapter in his career. It’s not just about reclaiming dominance—it’s about evolution. With this refined mindset, "The General" has sent a clear message to the bantamweight division: he’s smarter, stronger, and more dangerous than ever.
