Jonathan Haggerty Delays MMA Plans After Losing ONE Muay Thai Belt
Jonathan Haggerty

Jonathan Haggerty, the British striking sensation, has put his MMA aspirations on hold after losing his ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world title in his most recent fight. The former champion is determined to focus on reclaiming his Muay Thai title before shifting his attention to the multi-disciplinary world of MMA.

Haggerty, known as “The General,” suffered a swift 49-second defeat at ONE 168 in Denver, Colorado, at the hands of Thai superstar Superlek Kiatmoo9. The high-stakes bout between two champions ended in disappointment for Haggerty, as he surrendered his Muay Thai belt and his status as a two-sport world champion. The loss has prompted him to reassess his career trajectory, particularly his ambitions to compete in MMA.

Speaking on the Sky Sports MMA Club Podcast, Haggerty addressed his plans and the importance of prioritizing his return to Muay Thai. He explained that while MMA remains an option, his primary focus will be on regaining his Muay Thai title.

"Now that we've lost the Muay Thai belt, I'm going to be fully ready to go back and get that. I think that MMA is still on the cards, but I just feel like I need to manage the route I want to go down a lot better instead of taking fights here and there. Get myself ready and book it all again," Haggerty said.

While his long-term goal is to expand his fighting portfolio by transitioning to MMA, Haggerty acknowledges that his current Muay Thai journey requires his full attention. Apart from Muay Thai, the Englishman is also the ONE bantamweight kickboxing champion, which adds to the complexity of balancing his fighting career across multiple disciplines. For now, his immediate goal is to reclaim his Muay Thai crown and secure his legacy in the striking arts before entering the world of MMA.
