John Fury, father of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, offered his insights following the 'Day of Reckoning' card in Saudi Arabia, where heavyweight contenders Otto Wallin and Deontay Wilder faced tough challenges.
On the card, former world champion Wilder suffered an upset loss to Joseph Parker, while Wallin was stopped by Anthony Joshua in the main event. John Fury expressed his belief that both Wallin and Wilder were not the same fighters Tyson Fury had faced in the past, suggesting that Tyson's previous bouts may have taken a toll on them.
“Otto Wallin was sh!t scared of Anthony Joshua. Fair play to AJ, he looked like a man on a mission. Wallin never turned up, just like Deontay Wilder never [did against Joseph Parker]," John Fury told Seconds Out.
"I've never seen anything as bad as Wilder in my life. I was looking at two different people in Wallin and Wilder - those were not the people who fought Tyson. Tyson probably took everything out of them.”
Fury, scheduled to face Oleksandr Usyk in a highly anticipated undisputed fight on February 17, has been advised by his father to adjust his style for the unique challenge posed by Usyk. John Fury drew parallels to past matchups, highlighting the need for a different approach when facing a fighter like Usyk, known for his movement and technical skills.
“He needs a different style altogether with Usyk, he’s totally different. If you go back to, many years ago, you can watch it on the internet, it’s Gerry Cooney-Michael Spinks," John Fury said.
Drawing from historical examples such as the Gerry Cooney-Michael Spinks bout, where Spinks, a smaller, more agile fighter, triumphed over the larger Cooney, John Fury emphasized the importance of adapting to different styles in boxing. He cautioned that the aggressive styles that worked against opponents like Wilder and Francis Ngannou might not be effective against a tactician like Usyk.
