John Cooney Dies After Complications From His Celtic Title Fight

The boxing world is mourning the tragic loss of Galway boxer John Cooney, who passed away one week after his bout against Nathan Howells at Belfast’s Ulster Hall. The fight, which marked Cooney's first professional defeat, ended in heartbreak as the 28-year-old succumbed to complications from injuries sustained during the contest.

Cooney was stopped in the ninth round of his Celtic super-featherweight title defense against Newport’s Howells. Following the stoppage, he was placed on a stool and given oxygen as his condition began to deteriorate. The on-site medical team quickly assessed him, and Cooney was stretchered out of the ring and rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

It was later revealed that Cooney had suffered an intracranial hemorrhage and underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Cooney tragically passed away a week later.

Mark Dunlop of MHD Promotions released a statement on behalf of Cooney’s family:

“It is with complete devastation that we have to announce that after a week of battling for his life John Cooney has sadly passed away. Mr and Mrs Cooney and his fiancée Emmaleen would like to thank the staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital who have worked tirelessly to save John’s life and for everyone who has sent messages of support and prayers.
“He was a much-loved son, brother, and partner, and it will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was. RIP John ‘The Kid’ Cooney.”
