James Gallagher Parts Ways with PFL, Promises ‘This Is Not the End’

James Gallagher is officially a free agent after securing his release from the PFL. The former Bellator featherweight contender announced his departure on Wednesday morning through an Instagram post, making him the latest fighter to exit following the PFL-Bellator merger.

Gallagher (12-3) joins a growing list of Bellator veterans, including Patrício Freire, Patricky Freire, Gegard Mousasi, Neiman Gracie, and Kai Kamaka, who have expressed frustration over the lack of activity since the two promotions merged.

Despite his departure, the 28-year-old Irishman spoke positively about his time at Bellator, showing appreciation for the promotion that helped build his career. However, inactivity has been a major concern for many former Bellator fighters, leading to multiple high-profile releases.

Gallagher hasn’t fought since March 2024, when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Leandro Higo at Bellator Champions Series: Belfast. Before that, he also took part in a grappling match at ADXC 8 in December, where he was defeated by Movlid Khaybulaev.

While Gallagher’s next move remains uncertain, his statement suggests he isn’t done with MMA. "This is not the end," he declared, opening the door for potential opportunities with other promotions.

With his talent and name recognition, Gallagher could be a sought-after addition to promotions like UFC, ONE Championship, or even a return to Cage Warriors, where he began his career. Whether he chooses to stay at featherweight or consider a new division, his future remains an interesting storyline in the sport.

As the PFL-Bellator merger continues to reshape the MMA landscape, Gallagher’s departure signals that more fighters may seek opportunities elsewhere. With many former Bellator stars looking for consistent fights, Gallagher’s next step will be closely watched.
