British Muay Thai contender Jacob Smith is gearing up to reclaim his shot at the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title, confident that his skills have transformed dramatically since his previous encounter with defending champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon in May 2022. Their highly anticipated rematch takes place on Friday, November 8, at ONE 169: Malykhin vs. Reug Reug hosted at the iconic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Smith has made it clear he feels like a different fighter heading into this bout, citing his recent experiences in ONE Championship as pivotal in his growth. Following his last fight with Rodtang, Smith secured a decisive knockout against Walter Goncalves but later fell short in a controversial decision loss to Denis Puric. Despite the setback, Smith’s takeaway was positive, with his confidence bolstered by the lessons and adaptability gained through these high-stakes matches.
Reflecting on his evolution, Smith asserted,
“I can do everything better now. I’m better in every way. I’m as tough as I always have been, but my fight IQ is better and my overall skills have improved tenfold.”
He also emphasized how his increased experience in ONE has sharpened his game, giving him a fresh sense of readiness for this rematch with the flyweight champion.
The British striker believes that his best chance to dethrone Rodtang lies in the fight's extended format. Known for his endurance and late-round power, Smith has delivered numerous knockouts in the later stages of his bouts. Confident that a five-round clash will work to his advantage, he plans to employ a strategic approach that leverages his superior conditioning.
“Let’s just see how the fight plays out. I feel like five rounds favor me. I’m very fit, and I always come on strong toward the later rounds,” Smith noted.
Still, he remains adaptable, prepared to seize any opportunity for an early finish if the chance arises.
Smith’s drive and tactical approach have sparked anticipation for an explosive rematch. As he steps back into the Lumpinee Stadium ring, he’s determined to make a strong case for why his refined skills and intense preparation will make the difference in dethroning the dominant Rodtang.
