IBJJF Champ Renato Canuto Gears Up for Highly Anticipated MMA Debut in 2025

Renato Canuto, a multiple-time IBJJF champion, is finally ready to step into the MMA cage after over three years of dedicated training. With an impressive background in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and karate, Canuto is set to showcase his well-rounded skill set in his much-awaited debut.

Canuto’s MMA aspirations have been brewing for years, but he knew he had to take his time to develop the necessary skills.

“MMA was always in the back of my head – that I wanted to do that,” Canuto revealed. “It just took a lot longer than I thought to make my way here.”

His journey began when he unintentionally found himself back in an MMA gym, initially focusing on wrestling. From there, his passion reignited, and he immersed himself in training, leading to his decision to transition fully into MMA.

Though Canuto is shifting his focus to MMA, he isn’t abandoning his grappling roots. With titles in IBJJF, KASAI, UAEJJF, and Marianas Open, his decorated jiu-jitsu career continues. Additionally, with commitments to UFC Fight Pass grappling, Canuto is approaching MMA methodically, planning three or four fights in 2025 before considering a major promotion like the UFC.

“I do respect the game of MMA a lot,” Canuto stated. “I know it’s a whole different sport, and I have to go and test the waters first before I think too big about my dreams.”

He emphasized the importance of being fully prepared before making the jump to top-tier competition.

Under the guidance of Dewey Cooper at Xtreme Couture and Matheus Naccache at the UFC Performance Institute, Canuto is refining his striking to complement his elite grappling. His wife, Raquel Canuto, a seasoned MMA fighter, also provides invaluable support and insight into the sport.

“My striking is not too bad. Not great, yet. You can definitely punch me in the face,” Canuto admitted with a laugh. “But I’m getting more and more comfortable. I’m training my eyes and my footwork and being able to see things and understand things better. It’s been fun.”

While discussions are ongoing regarding his first fight, Canuto plans to make his debut at 155 pounds. With a strong foundation and a strategic approach, he aims to make a powerful statement in the MMA world while proudly representing jiu-jitsu.
