Ian Heinisch’s journey in mixed martial arts has been one of transformation, triumph, and ultimately, a bittersweet farewell. Once a promising contender in the UFC, Heinisch (14-5) was forced to step away from the sport he loves due to brain injuries that left him grappling with debilitating symptoms.
Heinisch first announced an indefinite break in July 2023, citing brain trauma as the reason. Reflecting on the decision, he described it as heart-wrenching yet necessary for his health.
“Man, I hid it for probably a year-and-a-half,” Heinisch revealed at the 16th Annual World MMA Awards. “When I was supposed to fight Sam Alvey, I had to pull out. I couldn’t hide it anymore. I couldn’t go to the gym. I didn’t feel like myself. I had headaches all the time. I was confusion. One time, I was driving in my car and I forgot where I was. That was when I was like, ‘OK, my only priority right now is to feel normal again.’”
Through stem cell therapy, CPI treatments, and time away from physical contact, Heinisch has made significant progress in his recovery. While he continues to train without contact, his love for the sport remains undiminished.
“I love this sport, man. It chose me, and now it’s been taken from me. It sucks, but my heart is still here for the people and I love my journey,” he said.
Though stepping away before achieving his dream of a title run was painful, Heinisch found solace in listening to his body. He hopes his story encourages other fighters to prioritize their health.
“At one point, I didn’t care if I fought again. I didn’t care about anything except to feel normal again. If you’re struggling with that, man, I’m telling you, rest your brain. It can heal, but you’ve got to let it rest.”
Today, Heinisch embraces life beyond fighting. Having transitioned to business ventures like cryptocurrency, he feels grateful for the platform MMA provided him.
