The Global Fight League (GFL) is poised to become a major disruptor in the world of mixed martial arts. On Wednesday, founder Darren Owen announced the launch of this new, team-based MMA league, set to debut its first season in April 2025. The groundbreaking concept was revealed during an interview on Ariel Helwani’s show, followed by a press release detailing the promotion's unique structure and mission.
Owen emphasized GFL’s intention to reshape the combat sports landscape:
“Launching in 2025, the Global Fight League seeks to redefine the business model and enhance competition in mixed martial arts.”
This league promises an innovative approach by organizing fighters into teams representing major global markets. Each team will consist of 20 athletes, covering 10 weight classes, and compete under a season-long format. The goal is to foster a deeper sense of engagement with fans around the world while allowing fighters to share in the league’s financial success.
A key differentiator for GFL is its athlete-centered model. Owen highlighted the league's commitment to revenue sharing and health protections: GFL will implement a 50/50 revenue share plan with fighters, offer retirement incentives, and prioritize athlete welfare. This progressive model aims to create a sustainable, long-term career path for MMA athletes, aligning their interests with the success of the league itself. The athlete association, headed by former WSOF champion Marlon Moraes, will ensure fighters have a voice in shaping their future.
The initial list of fighters signed to GFL is impressive, featuring eight former UFC champions: Tyron Woodley, Fabricio Werdum, Anthony Pettis, Junior dos Santos, Luke Rockhold, Frank Mir, Andrei Arlovski, and Benson Henderson. Additionally, MMA legends like Marlon Moraes, Wanderlei Silva, Gegard Mousasi, Rafael Carvalho, Lance Palmer, and Will Brooks, who have held titles in Bellator and other major promotions, will also join the roster.
Owen noted that GFL is set to engage with broadcast partners in January 2025 to finalize a rights deal, further establishing its presence on the global stage. With its team-based format, commitment to fighter welfare, and roster of elite talent, GFL is poised to become a compelling new chapter in the evolution of MMA.
