If you got money problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems and being Floyd Mayweather ain't one.
It’s a headline that almost feels like a paradox: Floyd “Money” Mayweather, the man synonymous with wealth and opulence, embroiled in allegations of unpaid wages. But this is the reality outside Mayweather Boxing and Fitness in Los Angeles, where disgruntled employees staged a public protest after reportedly not being paid “in weeks,” according to The Daily Mail.
The scene was a striking contrast to Mayweather’s well-known image. Protestors held signs with scathing messages like, “The $ (Money) Team has no $” and “Hard work, dedication…and then what?” Others went even further, accusing Mayweather of “labor trafficking” and “modern-day slavery.” Equipped with microphones, the staff voiced their frustrations loud and clear:
“We’re out here letting everybody know that they have not been treating us right,” one employee said. “Even if you work for a different company and you ain’t getting paid, you’re scared to show up and say something because you know how businesses do. They silence you and they fire you because everything’s ‘at will.’”
The fallout doesn’t stop there. Rumors are swirling that the LA fitness center may soon close its doors, with employees claiming Mayweather either doesn’t know or doesn’t care.
“Who knows if he’s aware or not? We don’t,” an employee lamented. “I was told that we can’t tell him. I can’t tell him that our studio’s closing, and he was here two weeks ago. We’ve been silenced.”
For a man who once flaunted his wealth by showering nightclub floors with hundred-dollar bills, this is a PR disaster. Mayweather, who has reportedly amassed billions through his boxing career and real estate ventures, is now facing the harsh glare of public scrutiny.
At the core of this controversy is the growing gap between Mayweather’s public persona and the claims of his staff. In a video uploaded recently, Mayweather boasted of owning over a billion dollars in real estate holdings. Yet, his employees—those who help maintain his brand and business ventures—are alleging financial neglect.
Mayweather has yet to respond to the allegations, leaving the court of public opinion to draw its conclusions. Of course, as with any story, there are two sides. Mayweather may claim that all staff have been paid and that this is a mismanagement issue at the local level. But until he speaks out, the narrative will continue to revolve around these damning protests.
The former champ might have dominated the ring, but this is one fight he can’t afford to ignore. Public perception, much like boxing, is all about timing and precision. For now, the silence is deafening—and damaging.
