Dustin Poirier Recants Retirement: Ready for Another Fight
Dustin Poirier, one of the most revered fighters in the MMA world has had fans speculating about his future ever since his hard-fought bout against Islam Makhachev. Initially, it seemed like Poirier was ready to hang up his gloves. However in a recent interview on the Anik & Florian podcast, Poirier revealed that he is reconsidering his retirement and is eager to step back into the Octagon.
“The shift needs to be internally for what the motivation for fighting is,” Poirier told Jon Anik and Kenny Florian. “Because if it’s not about the world title, why am I fighting? And after the Islam fight, when I got back home I thought, ‘Maybe this is it?’ A few weeks went by, injuries started hurting less and less post-fight, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to do this again.’ I’ve never lost two in a row. I can’t leave this sport on a loss."
This introspective look into Poirier's mindset gives fans a glimpse into the struggles and motivations of a top-tier fighter. Poirier’s dedication to the sport is unwavering, but he knows he needs to be all in if he decides to fight again. “But at the same time, I want to be 100 percent in it if I’m going to do it again, because I don’t want to disrespect the sport. I honor this stuff. I do. I just want to do it right and get my hand raised and leave on my terms with a win. But that’s no guarantee. I could go back out there and somebody could whip my ass. That’s the thing.”
When asked by Anik if his next opponent would come from a specific list of names, Poirier was clear and confident. “Do you believe that your next opponent will come out of this batch of names?” Anik asked, listing off notable fighters like Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor, Alexander Volkanovski, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira, and Colby Covington.
“100 percent,” Poirier responded." For sure. If I do fight again and when I do fight again, it will be definitely one of those guys you just said.”
This declaration has sent ripples through the MMA community. The potential matchups are tantalizing, and fans are eagerly anticipating who Poirier will face next. Whether it's a rematch with Conor McGregor, another clash with Justin Gaethje, or a new challenge against someone like Alexander Volkanovski or Colby Covington, one thing is certain: Poirier's return will be nothing short of spectacular.
As Poirier prepares for his comeback, the MMA world watches with bated breath. His journey back to the Octagon is not just about winning a fight; it's about leaving a legacy, honoring the sport he loves, and finishing on his own terms. Fight.TV is here for it!
