Dustin Poirier Eyes a Summer Swan Song in New Orleans for His Retirement Fight

Dustin Poirier, one of the most revered and battle-tested fighters in UFC history, may be nearing the end of his storied career. After a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful bid for undisputed UFC gold against Islam Makhachev, “The Diamond” has made it clear that he’s no longer interested in climbing the ladder for another title shot. With 40 professional MMA fights under his belt and a career full of highs, Poirier has shifted his focus to one last moment in the spotlight—a retirement fight that would cap off his legacy in style.

Poirier Teases a Summer Sendoff

During a recent interview with The Schmo at a Celebrity Sweat football game during Super Bowl LIX week, Poirier revealed that plans for his retirement fight are well underway. While he couldn’t provide all the details, he did share an exciting timeframe and potential location: this summer in New Orleans.

“Yeah, and I wish I could tell you more,” Poirier teased. “I’ve actually been having calls every week with the UFC, but it’s looking like summer in New Orleans is close to happening for my retirement fight. My pay-per-view in New Orleans this summer would be incredible. That’s what I’m pushing for, that’s what the UFC’s working towards, and things are getting pretty close.”

For Poirier, the chance to fight in his home state of Louisiana, where his MMA journey began, would be the perfect farewell.

“Laying the gloves down where it all started in Louisiana would be an honor for me,” he said.

A Legacy Cemented Without the Belt

While Poirier never secured the undisputed UFC title, his career is a testament to grit, perseverance, and unforgettable moments. From capturing the interim lightweight title against Max Holloway to delivering electrifying performances against Michael Chandler, Dan Hooker, and Eddie Alvarez, Poirier’s resume speaks for itself.

And let’s not forget his legendary rivalry with Conor McGregor, which saw Poirier hand the Irish superstar two decisive losses, further cementing his status as one of the sport’s greats.

Though the elusive undisputed title may have slipped through his grasp, Poirier has arguably achieved a level of success that transcends championship gold. His relentless pursuit of greatness, coupled with his philanthropy and humility outside the cage, has made him a fan favorite and a respected figure among his peers.

A Fitting Farewell

If the UFC can pull off Poirier’s dream scenario—a New Orleans pay-per-view event this summer—it will undoubtedly be a night to remember. For fans, it’s a chance to celebrate the incredible career of a fighter who always left it all in the Octagon. For Poirier, it’s the opportunity to say goodbye on his terms, in front of the people who’ve supported him from day one.

As plans for Poirier’s retirement fight continue to develop, the anticipation is already building. Stay tuned to Fight.TV for updates on what promises to be one of the most emotional and memorable farewells in MMA history.

The Diamond’s final chapter is being written—and it’s shaping up to be a masterpiece.
