Diego Lopes, a rising star in the featherweight division, is in an intriguing position as UFC 312 approaches. As the backup fighter for the upcoming title fight between Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway at UFC 308, Lopes remains uncertain if he’ll get the call to step into the octagon. However, the 26-6 MMA fighter remains optimistic and prepared for whatever comes his way.
“I’m training for both guys,” Lopes shared in an interview ahead of UFC 308. “I’m ready for everything, bro.”
Despite being on standby, Lopes expressed his hope that Topuria and Holloway remain healthy and able to compete, as he, too, is excited to watch the highly anticipated showdown.
However, Lopes has his sights set on a bigger opportunity, should the UFC 308 backup role not materialize. At a recent press conference, reigning featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski mentioned Lopes as a potential opponent for UFC 312 in Sydney. The event, slated for February 8, 2025, would offer Lopes a golden opportunity to prove himself against one of the division’s greatest.
Lopes is more than eager to have the chance to face Volkanovski, whether a title is on the line or not.
“If UFC has this plan, yeah. I’m ready for the fight vs. Volkanovski in Australia,” Lopes said. “I think it’s the biggest deal for the division for the next title fight. If the UFC [chooses] me as the fighter to fight Volkanovski in Australia, I’m ready.”
With a record of 5-1 in the UFC, Lopes has been steadily climbing the ranks, and a potential bout against Volkanovski could propel him to new heights. As UFC 308 looms, Lopes remains ready for any challenge, whether in Abu Dhabi or down under in Sydney.
