Is the legendary Demetrious Johnson finally ready to make a pivotal decision about his future in mixed martial arts (MMA)? For over 16 months, fans have eagerly awaited clarity, as Johnson, the reigning ONE Championship flyweight champion, contemplates whether to retire or return for one final fight. Although Johnson hasn’t fully committed to either path, he has focused on other pursuits, such as competing in Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments, building his YouTube channel, and expanding his business ventures.
In a recent statement, Johnson clarified that he isn’t officially retired but admitted that MMA “is not on my mind right now.” At 38 years old, he has largely shifted his focus, raising questions about whether he will ever return to the cage.
ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong has been in contact with Johnson throughout this period and fully supports whatever decision he makes.
“I talked to DJ nine months ago, six months ago, and a month ago, and I said, Hey, the ball’s in your court," Sityodtong said. “Whatever you want to do, we’ll support it.”
As ONE Championship gears up for its Denver event, ONE 168, where Johnson will be a special guest, Sityodtong hinted that Johnson’s attendance might not be merely for show.
“I think DJ’s in Denver for a reason,” he teased. “Maybe DJ’s going to announce the biggest fight ever or maybe he’s going to retire.”
If Johnson were to return to MMA, Sityodtong believes it would need to be for something monumental.
“It has to be a very big, big fight that would move the needle,” he said. “Something like the special rules fight he did with Rodtang [Jitmuangno].”
Whether Johnson steps back into the cage or walks away, his legacy as a UFC champion with 11 consecutive title defenses, along with his achievements in ONE Championship, cements his status as one of the greatest fighters of all time.
