UFC legend Daniel Cormier has weighed in on the potential main event for the milestone UFC 300, suggesting that the perfect headline bout would be the long-awaited trilogy between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.
While McGregor is expected to make his comeback against Michael Chandler, the date for the bout remains unconfirmed. Despite a rumored rematch between welterweight champion Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad, Cormier believes it lacks the necessary intensity to be the main event for UFC 300 on April 13 in Las Vegas.
Cormier emphasized the importance of a main event with a compelling backstory, bad blood, and significant appeal to draw the audience. In his view, McGregor, the sport's biggest star, should take the spotlight for UFC 300, and a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz would be the ideal matchup.
Nate Diaz recently posted a face-off image with McGregor, hinting at their potential third encounter. Cormier sees the history between these two fighters, with each winning one of the previous bouts, as a storyline that would captivate the audience and make UFC 300 a historic event.
“Regardless of who he would fight, the attraction comes with him,” Cormier said. “But if McGregor fights Diaz, that is what I believe draws the general fan in as much as anything that they could do in the UFC right now – just because of Nate Diaz and the intrigue, the way the first fight played out, the way the second fight played out."
While Diaz hasn't competed in MMA since September 2022, McGregor has been out of action since July 2021 due to a leg injury. The potential McGregor vs. Diaz trilogy, with both fighters in a different stage of their careers, adds an extra layer of intrigue to the bout.
As UFC 300 approaches, the excitement builds around the possibility of McGregor and Diaz settling their score in what could be the most significant main event for the historic event in Las Vegas.
