Dustin Poirier has sparked excitement with his bold idea for a four-man BMF title tournament, and even UFC President Dana White is intrigued by the concept. Following his knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in the BMF title fight at UFC 291, Poirier (30-8) isn’t done with pursuing that prestigious belt. Instead, he has a thrilling vision for how it could be defended — and he’s not the only one getting behind it.
With Max Holloway now holding the BMF title after his stunning KO of Gaethje at UFC 300, Poirier sees the perfect opportunity to bring together some of the toughest names in the game. His proposal? A four-man showdown featuring himself, Gaethje (25-5), Holloway (26-7), and Dan Hooker (24-12).
“This excites me because that kind of stuff is for the dogs, man,” Poirier shared with MMA Today. “That’s like the old PRIDE days or grand Prix... If you can fight in a tournament in one night, multiple opponents, I mean, dude, that’s kind of the definition of a BMF.”
Despite Dana White’s hesitancy toward tournament formats, Poirier’s enthusiasm seems contagious. When asked about the idea during a press conference at Dana White’s Contender Series, White was unexpectedly on board.
“Sounds fun. Never thought about it, but yeah, I love it,” White responded.
Poirier’s tournament idea also found quick support from Dan Hooker, who jumped into the conversation on “X” (formerly Twitter). Hooker, always ready for a challenge, would undoubtedly bring fireworks to a tournament packed with former champions and fan-favorite brawlers.
Meanwhile, Holloway, the reigning BMF champion, is gearing up for his blockbuster fight, set to challenge featherweight champ Ilia Topuria at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi on October 26.
Although Poirier’s tournament dream has yet to become a reality, the excitement surrounding the idea continues to grow, with fans and fighters eager to see how Dana White will proceed with this thrilling possibility.
