LAS VEGAS – UFC president Dana White is not holding back when discussing Francis Ngannou's financial success in boxing. White insists that Ngannou hasn’t made more money in the ring than he would have in the UFC, calling the narrative a "myth."
Francis Ngannou, once a UFC heavyweight champion, left the promotion for the Professional Fighters League (PFL) in pursuit of boxing fame. He secured high-profile matchups against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, with one ending in a close split decision loss to Fury and the other in a knockout defeat to Joshua. Despite these big opportunities, White remains adamant that Ngannou would have earned more staying in the UFC, particularly with the $8 million offer to fight Jon Jones.
White didn’t mince words when asked about Ngannou's boxing earnings:
“I know all the sh*t that you people don’t know, and I don’t care what everybody says,” White remarked during Dana White’s Contender Series 74 at the UFC Apex. “But that’s a fact. He was offered more money because I know the real numbers.”
White also dismissed the idea that boxing offers a financial advantage over MMA.
“That’s the bullshit publicly that people believe, but that’s not the truth," White said. "Boxing don’t work. Boxing does not work. What makes it work? You need a Saudi fcking trillionaire to make fcking fights, and even they get tired of the fcking bullsh*t."
According to White, the notion that fighters can earn substantially more in boxing is flawed.
“It’s all a myth. Every guy that tries to do the boxing thing ends up losing sh*t loads of money,” he claimed.
White's stance highlights his criticism of boxing’s business model, which he believes is broken and unsustainable without massive financial backing.
As Ngannou continues his career outside the UFC, the debate over fighter pay in boxing versus MMA remains in the spotlight. But for Dana White, the idea of greener pastures in the boxing ring is nothing more than a fable.
