Colby Covington, the former UFC welterweight title challenger, has redirected his attention away from Ian Machado Garry and towards high-profile matchups with Belal Muhammad or Charles Oliveira for his next octagon appearance.
In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Covington expressed that the potential fight with Garry is unlikely to materialize, stating,
"I don’t know if that ship will come back around." Covington emphasized that Garry's recent performances don't elevate him to a level that would significantly benefit Covington's career.
Covington, known for his confrontational style both inside and outside the cage, has set his sights on Belal Muhammad, currently ranked as the No. 1 welterweight contender. Covington believes that a matchup with Muhammad, who has engaged in verbal jousts with him, would be an ideal next step in his UFC journey.
Regarding his interest in former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, Covington welcomed the Brazilian's potential move to the welterweight division. Oliveira recently hinted at the possibility of competing at 170 pounds, prompting Covington to extend a challenge to him.
Covington's hiatus from the octagon followed a title challenge against Leon Edwards, where he suffered a decisive defeat. Despite the setback, Covington remains determined to return to championship contention, targeting a comeback in the autumn of 2024.
Acknowledging his ongoing recovery from a foot injury sustained in his last bout, Covington emphasized the importance of being fully fit for his next fight, aiming to showcase his best performance and solidify his legacy in the sport.
As Covington navigates his path back to the UFC spotlight, fans eagerly anticipate the announcement of his next opponent and the prospect of witnessing high-stakes clashes in the welterweight division.
