Colby Covington accuses Poirier and Chimaev of running away from him

Colby Covington, the former UFC interim welterweight champion, has been out of action for over a year and a half. He last competed at UFC 272, where he defeated his rival Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision. Since then, he has been waiting for another opportunity to fight for the title, but he says he has been denied by several fighters.

In a recent interview with Chael Sonnen, Covington revealed that he was offered fights with Dustin Poirier and Khamzat Chimaev, but both of them declined. He also said that he agreed to do The Ultimate Fighter with Leon Edwards, but the show was given to Conor McGregor instead. He then accepted to be the backup fighter for the UFC London card, but that event was canceled due to the pandemic.

Covington said that he was ready to face Poirier, who is the current UFC lightweight champion, in a welterweight bout. He claimed that Poirier was scared of him and ran away from the challenge. He also said that he wanted to end the hype of Chimaev, who is undefeated in MMA and has won four fights in the UFC in impressive fashion. He accused Chimaev of being unprofessional and scared to fight him.

Covington also expressed his frustration with the UFC for not giving him a title shot. He said that he deserved to fight for the belt again, after losing to Kamaru Usman by TKO in 2019. He said that he was not interested in fighting anyone else, except for Usman or Edwards.

Covington is known for his trash talk and controversial statements, and he did not hold back in his interview with Sonnen. He also took shots at McGregor, Masvidal, Nate Diaz, and other fighters. He said that he was the best welterweight in the world, and that he would prove it when he gets his chance.

A fight between Covington and Poirier or Chimaev would have been a huge attraction for the fans, but it seems that neither of them are interested in facing him. Covington will have to wait for his next opponent, while Poirier is expected to face McGregor for the fourth time later this year, and Chimaev is scheduled to fight Paulo Costa in October.
