The UFC 294 co-main event between Khamzat Chimaev and Paulo Costa is in doubt, according to UFC president Dana White.
He revealed that Costa’s elbow surgery, which he underwent a few weeks ago, could prevent him from fighting Chimaev. White spoke to the media after the Contender Series and said that the fight might be off.
“That’s possible [Chimaev vs Costa being off].”
“We’ll know very soon. Unless someone else with a big mouth shows up, you know what I mean? So, yeah. I should have an answer for you in a couple of hours.”
White also said that they were talking to some potential replacements if Costa pulls out.
“We’re talking to a couple of people right now.”
UFC 294 has already lost its original main event, as Charles Oliveira withdrew from his lightweight title defense against Islam Makhachev.
He was replaced by Alexander Volkanovski, who will face Makhachev in a rematch. Fans are hoping that the UFC can salvage the co-main event, as Chimaev vs Costa is expected to be a thrilling clash.
