ONE Championship’s legendary former bantamweight Muay Thai champion Nong-O Hama made his highly anticipated flyweight debut at ONE Fight Night 28, taking on fourth-ranked contender Kongthoranee Sor Sommai. The thrilling battle at Lumpinee Stadium on February 7 ended in a razor-close split-decision win for Kongthoranee, but not everyone agreed with the result.
Among those who saw the fight differently was ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, who believes the judges made the wrong call and is eager to see a rematch between the two elite fighters.
“I disagree with the judges for the fight between Kongthoranee and Nong-O,” Sityodtong told the Bangkok Post. “It was a super close fight between two champions who represent the best of the best. But from my eyes, I think Nong-O beat Kongthoranee by a narrow margin.”
Despite the controversial result, Sityodtong remains confident that both fighters are capable of reaching the pinnacle of the division.
“To be clear though, I believe both Nong-O and Kongthoranee have the potential to be a World Champion in ONE in the future,” he added.
With such a competitive flyweight Muay Thai landscape, Sityodtong wants to determine a definitive title contender, making a rematch between the two an exciting possibility. Meanwhile, Kongthoranee is already looking ahead to a bigger challenge. Fresh off the biggest win of his career, the young Thai striker has his sights set on a rematch against Superlek Kiatmoo9, ONE’s two-sport, two-weight World Champion.
The pair last faced off at ONE Friday Fights 68 in June 2024, where Superlek secured a unanimous decision victory. However, riding a three-fight winning streak, Kongthoranee feels more confident than ever about avenging that loss.
“Yes, I am ready,” he declared. “I know for sure that I will train very hard so that I can successfully have a win in the rematch.”
Whether Kongthoranee gets his wish to challenge Superlek again or must first run it back with Nong-O, the flyweight division is heating up with top-tier talent vying for supremacy.
