UFC 309: Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler

Charles Oliveira showcased his dominance yet again in the UFC 309 co-main event, securing a resounding decision victory over Michael Chandler despite a late scare in the final round. The judges scored the bout 49-46, 49-46, and 49-45, reflecting Oliveira's control throughout most of the fight.

The former lightweight champion outclassed Chandler in every aspect during the first four rounds. Oliveira delivered precise strikes, powerful takedowns, and ground control that left Chandler struggling to respond. His calculated offense showcased his elite striking and grappling, keeping Chandler on the defensive for much of the fight.

“This guy’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever fought,” Oliveira said about Chandler. “This guy has all my respect. Whoever is next in line, I’ll be there front row in January.”

The fight opened with Oliveira executing a slick trip takedown, gaining the upper hand despite a minor setback when his leg got caught in an awkward position. By the second round, Oliveira's straight punches left Chandler visibly shaken, forcing him to retreat. Oliveira followed up with more devastating strikes and effective ground control, delivering brutal elbows and securing dominant positions.

Chandler attempted a comeback in the third and fourth rounds, throwing wild punches to shift momentum. However, Oliveira’s precision and composure nullified Chandler's aggression. Oliveira continuously advanced to superior positions, keeping Chandler trapped and unable to mount a substantial counterattack.

The fifth round brought drama as Chandler unleashed his most powerful punches, briefly putting Oliveira on the defensive. Despite landing some impactful shots, Chandler couldn’t capitalize fully. Oliveira survived the barrage, responded with another takedown, and locked in dominant positions to seal the victory.

Chandler reflected on the loss with his trademark grit, stating,

“All I know how to do is throw American bad ass caution to the wind. Maybe Max Holloway for the ‘BMF’ belt or Conor McGregor if you can get your house back in order … come back and beat me if you can.”
