Chad Mendes, a three-time UFC featherweight title contender, remains under contract with the UFC, but his enthusiasm for returning to the octagon is low. Mendes, who last fought in the UFC in December 2018 against future champion Alexander Volkanovski, recently discussed his future in MMA following a grappling victory over Diego Brandao at ADXC 5.
“I still I’m under contract with the UFC though,” Mendes revealed.
Despite having three or four fights left on his contract, Mendes expressed little desire to return to MMA.
“I really don’t have any desire to do it, but I was able to do the bare-knuckle boxing, and I can come do these grappling events anytime,” he explained.
Mendes’ recent foray into Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) included a knockout win over Joshuah Alvarez and a split decision loss to Eddie Alvarez. However, his primary focus now lies outside of the octagon. The fighter cited the physical toll and rigorous demands of MMA as significant deterrents to his return.
“[UFC] would have to pay me a lot of money [to fight again], honestly, and they’re not willing to do it, so no,” Mendes candidly shared. “Honestly, at this point in my career, I have zero desire to cut any weight... I love competing, and I absolutely hate cutting weight.”
With his attention divided between family life and multiple business ventures, Mendes finds it challenging to dedicate the necessary time to training. Mendes said,
“I got two little girls at home and a wife and multiple businesses that I’m trying to blow up and make it successful,” emphasizing the difficulty of balancing his commitments.
Although he keeps saying he’s retired, Mendes remains open to opportunities that allow him to compete without the pressures of cutting weight or extensive preparation.
Mendes' recent win against Brandao at ADXC 5 showcased his wrestling prowess, although he admitted to being surprised by Brandao’s defensive skills. Despite limited preparation time, Mendes emerged victorious and hinted at competing again under favorable conditions.
For now, the former title contender seems content focusing on his off-the-mat pursuits, leaving a UFC return contingent on an offer he can’t refuse.
