Boxing fans are in for a historic showdown as Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford have agreed to fight in September in Las Vegas, according to The Ring. This highly anticipated bout will not only bring two of boxing’s biggest stars together but could also significantly impact their legacies.
At 34 years old, Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) was once the sport’s pound-for-pound king, though he has now slipped as low as No. 7 in the rankings. A victory over Crawford could elevate him back toward the top. Meanwhile, Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), 37, currently holds the No. 2 pound-for-pound ranking and remains undefeated. The stakes couldn’t be higher for both fighters.
One of the biggest question marks surrounding this fight is the weight class. Crawford, a four-division world champion, has never weighed more than 153 pounds, most recently competing at super welterweight. In contrast, Alvarez, who has also won world titles across four weight classes, hasn’t fought below 166 pounds since 2019, when he faced Rocky Fielding at 159 pounds. Finding a middle ground will be key to making this fight competitive.
Both men have resumes worthy of the Boxing Hall of Fame.
Alvarez, the reigning WBC and WBO super middleweight champion, is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Edgar Berlanga on September 14. Over the years, he has claimed wins over some of the sport’s biggest names, including Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo, and Shane Mosley. His only losses came against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (2013) and Dmitry Bivol (2022).
Crawford, currently holding the world super welterweight title, last defeated Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision. His most notable victory came in 2023 when he stopped Errol Spence Jr. in a statement-making performance.
With two of boxing’s finest set to clash, the upcoming fight in Las Vegas could define their legacies and determine who truly deserves a spot at the top of the sport.
