The UFC is returning to ABC again next month with a bloody and thrilling event.
On Wednesday, Promotion announced that the pre-existing featherweight clash between Brian Ortega and Jair Rodriguez would serve as the headliner for the UFC at ABC 3 on July 16 at UBS Arena in Elmont, NY.
The first UFC match on ABC 1 took place in January 2021 and was headlined by Max Holloway's master class against Calvin Kattar. Just a few months later in April, on ABC 2, the UFC hosted a major event between Marvin Vettori and Kevin Holland, which Vettori won by a unanimous decision.
And now ABC 3 will be a big place for both UFC Ortega (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) and Rodriguez (13-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC).
Ortega has twice challenged for the UFC belt. However, they fell short on both occasions, losing to Max Holloway in UFC 231 and Alexander Volkanovski in UFC 266. El Pantera lost to Max Holloway in his final fight in the main event of the UFC Fight Night 197.
Brian Ortega is currently ranked No. 2 in the UFC's Featherweight Division and competes at 145lbs. The former two-time title challenger has a professional record of 15-2, one unbeaten. There are 10 complements to the T-City name, including three T / KOs and seven submissions.
His UFC record is 7-2-1 (NC). 'T-City' won a significant number of promotions on the likes of Chan Sung Jung, Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson, and Renato Moicano.
On the other hand, Rodriguez himself has not been very active and there has been only one fight since 2019 where he has twice faced Jeremy Stephens. The first was a ridiculous 16-second ipok that resulted in "no competition", while the match again saw Rodriguez clearly work towards a unanimous decision. His last time came in November 2021 when he competed with the aforementioned Holloway in a quick classic. Despite his best efforts, Rodriguez failed to overcome the former champion and divisional legend.
His UFC record is 8-2-1 (NC). In its current promotion, El Pantera has won significant victories over fighters like Chen Sung Jung, Jeremy Stephens, and BJP Pan.
Brian Ortega or Yair Rodriguez can save the title shot with a win. The winner of their upcoming clash could strengthen their position as the No. 1 contender in the division. Alexander Volkanowski is set to face Max Holloway for the third time in UFC 276 with a featherweight belt.
Given the genealogy and fighting style of both Ortega and Rodriguez, fans can expect the competition to be a barn burner.
