A major flyweight showdown is set to headline UFC Mexico City as former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno is expected to face Steve Erceg in the main event on March 29. Initially, a featherweight clash between Diego Lopes and Yair Rodriguez was rumored to be the headliner. Still, recent reports from RealKevinK on X, later confirmed by MMA Mania’s Alex Behunin, have indicated that Moreno vs. Erceg will now take center stage.
Moreno, one of Mexico’s biggest MMA stars, returned to action in November after a brief layoff, stepping into the octagon in Canada against rising contender Amir Albazi. Despite Albazi’s impressive six-fight winning streak and a recent victory over Kai Kara-France, Moreno delivered a dominant performance, controlling the fight on the feet and securing a unanimous decision win after five rounds. Now, Moreno is set for his next challenge, this time on home soil in front of a passionate Mexican crowd.
His opponent, Steve Erceg, is looking to bounce back after suffering consecutive losses. The Australian flyweight had a sensational start to his UFC career in 2023, racking up three straight wins and earning a shot at flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 301 last May. However, he fell short in a decision loss to the reigning champ and then suffered a knockout loss to Kai Kara-France in August. Now, Erceg has a golden opportunity to get back on track against Moreno in a high-stakes main event.
Moreno’s return to Mexico City will be a key moment in his career as he aims to work his way back to a title shot. For Erceg, this is a must-win fight if he wants to remain in contention at 125 pounds.
